Peanut butter contaminated with Salmonella has sickened at least six Wisconsin consumers according to the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services. The six reported cases took place between September 5, 2006 and January 28, 2007, and sickened consumers in several Wisconsin counties, including Dane, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Outagamie, Washington and Winnebago. ConAgra Food's peanut butter recall was announced on February 14, 2007.

Consumers should examine the lids of jars with product codes beginning 2111 for the recalled product. Although ConAgra has suggested that consumers return the lids for a refund, in the case of any person sickened by the product the lid should be retained as crucial evidence. The United States Center for Disease control, which says that the Salmonella poisoning outbreak has sickened more than 300 people across the country since August, has linked the outbreak to tainted peanut butter from a factory in Sylvester, Ga.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps, and typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after ingestion, and the illness usually lasts four to seven days.
