Bausch and Lomb announced yesterday that it has stopped shipment of ReNu contact lens solution due to fears the product may be linked to fusarium keratitis, a fungal infection. While this is a good move by the company, it makes you wonder why steps weren't taken sooner, since the company halted sales in Singapore and Hong Kong nearly two months ago.

Officials in Singapore are investigating 39 reports of the fungal infection, but the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is looking into 109 reports since June 2005.

In February, Bausch & Lomb halted sales of its ReNu contact lens solution in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Without treatment, which can last two to three months, the infection can scar the cornea and blind its victims. Eight U.S. patients have required cornea transplants.

Symptoms of the infection include eye pain and redness, blurred vision, tearing or other eye discharge and increased sensitivity to light.

If you or a family member has been affected by any of these symptoms, see a doctor immediately. It may also be important to contact an attorney to learn about your legal rights.

The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette has more on the Bausch and Lomb ReNu issue.
