An editorial from the Appleton Post-Crescent responds to the frightening views about judicial independence purveyed in a recent speech by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. The Bush Adminstration sees our constitutional scheme as one that would have the judiciary defer to the judgments of the executive and legislative branches.

Rightfully calling these views "appalling", the editorial comments:

Is what we want from our judges? Obedience and unquestioned loyalty? Subservience? The judiciary has every ounce of independence and authority Congress and the president do. And no matter how much that frustrates them, they have absolutely no right to change it. That they would like to, and would be so brash as to actually propose it, is arrogance of the highest order and should insult every American.
